Philippines Wooden Bagobo Model Shield Early 20th Century
This Philippine Bagobo Model Shield is just under 10" long and is beautifully detailed. This piece is from the early 20th century if not a little earlier. There are a few missing hairplugs (one at either side of the bottom horizontal strut, one under the right side of the top horizontal strut, and one second from the top on the right side) there is a repaired chip behind the top right corner, and the old black cotton thread that secures the right side of the top horizontal strut is broken. There is some light paint residue by the central boss of the shield.
Similar model shields can be seen on the American Museum of Natural History website www.http://anthro.amnh.org/asia . A unique older example of Filipino carving that will add to any collection of shields and weaponry of the Philippines.
