Tikopia Turmeric Container Polynesian Outlier Mortar Ex - Maslyn Williams Field Collected Specimen
This scarce wooden cylinder was field collected in Tikopia by documentary film maker and author Maslyn Williams during the mid 20th century. A similar piece on page 97 of Tikopia Collected by Elizabeth Bonshek. She lists it as a container for cooking Turmeric (Umu Renga) or storage (Taonga).
The piece has a worn blackened surface and stands 9" tall by 4 1/4" wide. There are some areas of loss along the rim and at the base, as well as a couple of small holes in the two stable, vertical cracks. The base has a center cut hole which appears to be standard for these and there are nice adze markings to the base's surface as well. The white rectangular marking inside is residual adhesive from old cloth tape label.
