RARE Philippines Bagobo Shield with Deep Carved Decoration
This scarce Bagobo shield from Mindanao in the Philippines is a unique example in that it has wider deeper carving than is usually found on them. The shield has an overall height of 39 1/8" x 13 5/8" at it's widest. The uppermost wooden section (1 3/4" tall) is a replacement as are the thin rattan bindings that hold the horizontal wooden struts in front and behind. A nice thick carved shield with plenty of good age as can be seen on the handle's patination and the edge wear.
This shield was found with the pieces shown (aside from the thin top section) in an old estate in Monrovia, California a few years ago along with a second shield. Restoration has returned it to it's former glory. A handsome example.
