Pohnpei Dance Paddle Ex- Hartford Children's Museum Conn.
Pohnpei (Micronesia) Dance Paddle with tied grass fiber fringe and incised designs on both sides. Formerly in the collection of the Hartford Children's Museum West Hartford Connecticut. The old string tag tied to the paddle reads "65.158 Pa.Is Ponape Is. 190 Love (scratched out and replaced with the word Dance) Stick. Used in Courtship .. Individual Design 40" long" on one side. The other side of the tag reads "Mrs Roland Kenney" who was the original donor no doubt. The piece itself measures just over 38" so apparently about 2" of the fiber tassle has been lost from the tip over time in storage. Some of the fragile grass tassles have loss to their tips along the sides. The flat bottom edge of the paddle section has the same inventory number as the string tag painted on. The handle section swells slightly where the hand would grip it above the flat pommel. A nice early 20th century (if not older) example.
