Philippine Bontoc Shield
This Ifugao shield from the Philippines is a classic Bontoc form with dual split rattan woven bands. The shield appears to be an early 20th Century example if not earlier and it's overall length is 35" x 10" wide. The blackened surface of the wood has some wear at the edges as well as the shield's protruding center and the wood's color shows age as well as a dry patination. The upper half of the backside has a crosshatch or diagonal grid pattern just above the recessed handle. There is some minor loss to the woven rattan but the piece is a handsome example.
