Philippine Carved Figural Horn Handled Sword Manila 1936
This Philippine sword has a figural horn handle which appears to be either an animal or demon's head. The overall length of this sword is 25 1/2" withe the blade accounting for 19" of the total length. The thick brass hilt and shape of the blade itself look similar to that of a Tenegre. There is minor loss (small chip) at the bottom edge of the left side of the handle where it meets the brass ferrule. The blade is very sharp.
The leather scabbard is decorated on the top cuff/flap MANILA CARNIVAL OF 1936 GM. The original owner's initials are scratched into the scabbard GPK.
This sword was recently acquired in a large Southern California collection of Philippine material that had been stored by a family since 1936 when it was all sent to a girlfriend by a soldier while he was stationed there between 1934 and 1936.
