New Guinea Abelam Maira Figure
This Hardwood Ancestral carving is a Maira figure by the Abelam in the Maprik/Wosera area of Papua New Guinea. These ancestor carvings are kept in the Haus Tambaran for ceremonial power and worship. A power circle or enclosure made with Maira inside the Haus Tambaran is used for Power ceremonies.
This 15 1/4" tall figure has signs of age and handling. The lower back region shows old damage. The metal stand is included with the carving. From a Los Angeles tribal art collector.
