Maranao Philippines Carved Wooden Mortar Ex - Armand Labbe
This wooden Mortar from the Philippines is an excellent example of the work of Maranao artists in Mindanao. The Sarimanok bird design (normally mistaken for floral patterns) is well executed on both sides of the handle. The piece measures 14 1/4" from the front lip of the bowl to the back edge of the handle, and the bowl itself measures 7 1/2" wide x 5 1/4" tall. The bottom of the handle has two old nail repairs in it, preventing an aged horizontal crack from getting bigger.
This carved wooden piece is from the collection of Armand Labbe, formerly of the Bowers Museum in Southern California and author.
